About Us
Helping to develop imagination, creativity and confidence in young children
We provide musical sessions for pre-school age children in Hexham, with about 15 children in each class. The content of each session is carefully arranged to suit either younger children ( 9 months to about 2.5 years) or older ones (2.5 - 4 years old).
Our approach
We have 2 leaders in each class, Julie and Evi. At any one time during the 40 minute sessions one of us plays the piano and the other is in the circle leading the children. We cover a combination of traditional and contemporary songs and give the children the opportunity to develop their sense of rhythm, musical timing, spatial awareness and vocabulary. Most of all we want them to have fun, because that's a great way to learn.
Background
Music and Movement was set up in Hexham in 1979 by Alice Emmerson, after placing an advert in the local newspaper, the Hexham Courant. She recalled at the most recent anniversary celebration "We started in my front room with just a handful of children and never thought that the group would still be going strong 40 years later, continuing to provide the same mix of music and dance in a fun way, as we set out to do."
Music and Movement is run as a charity by a committee of trustees, all of whom are present or past parents of 'Music and Movement' children.
